What Can I Put in a Skip?

Prohibited Items

Prohibited Items must not be placed in our skips. These include (but are not limited to) the following:

Electrical Appliances

Fridges, freezers, washing machines, dishwashers, televisions and computer monitors should be taken to a registered or designated WEEE recycling facility. If the item requires a battery or has a plug, then you cannot place it in the skip. If you’re unsure of whether an item is classified as a “WEEE”, please call us before placing it in your skip.

Grade D Wood Waste & Hazardous Wood

We are unable to accept hazardous wood waste which includes but is not limited to railway sleepers and telegraph poles. Hazardous wood is often dark-looking wood treated with creosote or chlorophenolic formulations which give it a smoky or chemical smell. If you’re unsure if your wood is hazardous, please call us before placing it in your skip.

Batteries

Batteries can’t be put in a skip as they contain harmful chemicals that must be treated separately.

Asbestos

Asbestos is classified as a hazardous material and must never be placed in one of our skips. If you find asbestos anywhere, we suggest calling a specialist who will be able to dispose of it safely.

Gas Cylinders

Gas Cylinders are hazardous as gas is flammable and, therefore, we are unable to accept them in our skips.

Medical Waste

Medical Waste includes a range of medical items such as bodily fluids, needles (used or not), and any other type of medical waste.

Paint, Solvents, Oils and Fuels

These are hazardous materials and pose a serious risk to people and the environment. This also includes fluorescent tubes which contain mercury.

Mattresses

Mattresses are classed as contaminated waste and must not be placed in our skips. We suggest you contact your local council regarding the removal of any mattresses.

Animal & Human Waste

Animal / Human Waste must never be placed in our skips as this will render the skip contaminated.

Bitumen Roofing Felt

Bitumen Roofing Felt must never be disposed of in our skips.

Items Accepted with Prior Agreement
(at Additional Cost)

Butler Skips can remove these items subject to an additional cost. Please call us, or WhatsApp us on 07976 218333 to discuss.

Sofas/Upholstered Furniture (POPs)

Sofas/Upholstered Furniture (POPs) need to be processed, stored, and treated in a certain manner in light of new regulations known as POP or “Persistent Organic Pollutants”. This means additional processing, storage and treatment is required for items which are intact such as sofas, armchairs and upholstered office chairs. We can dispose of these items, but please contact us first as an additional POP charge will be payable.

Glass

It is acceptable to put a small amount of glass, such as a mirror, into one of our skips. However, we can’t accept large amounts of glass and mirrors as this must be separated from other general mixed waste. If you need to dispose of a large amount of glass, please call us and we can discuss hiring a glass-only skip.

Carpet

Carpet must not exceed 20% of the total skip waste.  If you need to dispose of a large amount of carpet, please call us and we can discuss hiring a carpet-only skip.

Plasterboard

Whilst we can accept plasterboard, we will only be able to do so if it has been separated from the other waste in the skip and placed in rubble sack bags. It must then be placed at the top of the skip. We will accept a maximum of two rubble sacks per skip. If you have large amounts of plasterboard to dispose of, please call us to discuss.

Tyres and Rubber

We may be able to assist with the removal of certain items such as rubber and tyres, at an additional cost. Please call us to discuss.
